FSU Announces In Person Graduation Ceremonies

By Liam Wirsansky on March 4, 2021

Following a full calendar year in which no in person graduations were held for its students, Florida State University announced last week that they would be holding their socially distant graduation ceremonies for its Spring 2021 graduates. While the ceremonies have currently been scheduled with the stipulation of being “subject to change” according to the emails students received, it remains to be a massive win for students seeking some semblance of normalcy during their final experiences in college since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic began.

With a completed football season in the Fall 2020 semester, FSU is no stranger to hosting large and in person events during the pandemic. The double standard of hosting sporting events, while canceling customary events of significance for the school’s regular students has been a controversial and hot button issue for much of the school year among students, parents, teachers, and locals around the community. With the university preparing to bring students back for in-person instruction starting this summer, as well as the matter that they’ve opened their own COVID-19 vaccination site, President John Thrasher and the rest of the university believed that it was finally safe enough to host these commencement ceremonies.

This has been an extraordinary year in many ways, and I’ve been so impressed by your resilience and flexibility,” Thrasher stated in a letter sent to upcoming graduates. “You have worked through some tremendous challenges in order to graduate. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that Florida State University will celebrate this incredible milestone with in-person commencement ceremonies in April.”

While many students are thrilled to be having these graduation events, others are still worried about the health and safety risks it may pose. To limit any sort of exposure or danger, the school’s graduations will be divided into 11 separate ceremonies in order to comply with COVID-19 procedures and precautions, stemming from the CDC’s guidelines. The ceremonies will be held on the weekends of Apr. 17th-18thand April 24th-25th, divided based on colleges and departments, and taking place in FSU’s Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Each graduate will be allowed four tickets to have those guests in the audience, while wearing masks will be required for everyone present. Attempting to replicate as many components of the traditional graduation, President Thrasher will be the main speaker reading out the names of the graduates as they walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Professional photographers will also be present to commemorate the graduation ceremony.
