If you’re a music lover like I am, your headphones are always in or you’ve got music playing in your room at every appropriate moment. My personal favorite genre is alternative. One of the many great things about it is that there is a song for every mood and every occasion. If you feel the same way about alternative music as I do, I encourage listening to these songs that just seem to work themselves into certain parts of your day:

Walking to Class

“I Could Have Lied” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers

My walk to class is a time for thinking. It is also a bit dreary because, let’s face it, I am never excited about having to sit and learn for an hour. There must be a song to match. “I Could Have Lied” is a song about taking chances, rejection and regret. Though this makes it sound depressing, it is relatable and definitely goes along with a thoughtful morning walk to class.

After Class

“Junk of the Heart (Happy)” by The Kooks

The walk home from class carries with it a certain relief and airiness. The mood most often calls for something cheery to reward yourself for a day of hard work. It may seem like your typical love song, but “Junk of the Heart (Happy)” has a way of making you appreciate the people who make you happy. It is not a song about getting the girl; it is simply one about being optimistic about love and happiness.

Before Bed

“Dead Sea” by The Lumineers

It is probably not the best idea to be amped up just before you lay down to sleep. This one has got to be very mellow. In my opinion, it also helps to listen to a song with a cheery meaning so you go to sleep in a good mood. I think the perfect song to listen to would be “Dead Sea” because it has a calming tone, and it is actually very uplifting. It will have you thinking about people that are important to you.

Getting Ready to Go Out

“Doses and Mimosas” by Cherub

This song is perfect to play while getting ready because it is so fun to sing and dance along to. My roommates and I love to play it and sing the chorus at the top of our lungs, and we cannot help but smile while we are doing so. Aside from the lyrics, it also provides unique and entertaining background music so that you can ensure you are pumped up for your night.

Homework

“The Scientist” by Coldplay

This one is a tough one. As an English major, I often do not have music on while doing homework. Most of my work has to do with reading and writing, and I cannot easily mix that with music. But, on the occasion that music and homework do mix, “The Scientist” is a great choice. Though the title itself proves it is perfect to listen to while doing homework, it is only a bonus. It doesn’t have anything too distracting about it, so it is easy to keep your concentration. Coldplay makes working and studying much better than it should be.

In the Shower

“Oh No!” by Marina and The Diamonds

If you love to sing in the shower, this is the song for you. I have deemed it one of Marina and The Diamonds’ truest and most fun songs. “Oh No!” has this way of making you feel so on top of the world that you will forget you are in the shower. I know exactly what I want and who I wanna be.  Plus, lead singer, Marina Lambrini Diamandis, uses some really unique intonations in her voice that make it amusing to imitate while singing out loud.

Hanging Out With Friends

“Mr. Brightside” by The Killers

I rarely meet a person who dislikes, has never heard of, is sick of or stays quiet during this song. Whether it comes on at a large social gathering or while you’re only with a few friends, “Mr. Brightside” is the perfect crowd pleaser.

Just Chilling

“Cigarette Daydreams” by Cage the Elephant

Its acoustic guitar sounds, the lyrics and the mellow tone bring about feelings of bliss and nostalgia. I love listening to “Cigarette Daydreams” while doing absolutely nothing because I get to take it all in.

Of course, don’t limit yourself to just these times to listen to great music. All of the alternative songs and artists mentioned (and many more that aren’t) have so much to offer no matter the time of day.

However, it has been said that a song is much more likable when it seems to fit into your life. I am simply trying to help you maximize enjoyment of some really good music.
